A Young Girl Reading | Style Imitating Art

Happy Style Imitating Art Day! This week we are getting our sartorial mitts on “A Young Girl Reading“ byJean-HonorĂ© Fragonard. This one was pretty easy as it plays with two of my favorite colors. Yellow and mauve is a color combo that sits nicely in my heart as it is just so soft and pleasant.

I also enjoyed how the collar on my top, which is actually a dress, is a modern take on the collar the girl wears in the painting. I would have worn just the yellow dress, but it fits poorly and there are not many tweaks known to me that make it look decent. I can't alter it myself because the construction is a bit complicated and yet, I can't let it go. It was my favorite dress for years and I've never seen it's equal. So, it will remain in my closet, occasionally serving as a top until some other factor pops up and allows me to do something definitive with it.

My shoes don't fit well either. But, they're yellow too. So, obviously they must stick around, as well.

Make sure to check out Jen's blog for the full round-up of art inspired looks!

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose | Style Imitating Art

source

Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't see you there. I was too busy enjoying this gorgeous painting. Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose by John Singer Sargent. Please, come join me.

Aaaaah...isn't it wonderful?

Good thing it's this week's pick for Style Imitating Art so, I get to enjoy it on several levels. I took a break from SIA as to not interrupt the candy shop flow from last month, but I am back at again and could this be a better painting to jump back in with? No Chandler sarcasm intended. That's all genuine enthusiasm.

This flowing romantic maxi was an obvious choice with it's pastel lily print spread across the pale, neutral fabric. I've been waiting for this dress to make it's debut on the blog because look at it. I originally saw it on A Clothes Horse and fell madly and desperately in love. This dress is one of the rare instances where I found something on a blog and was actually able to make it my own. It took some work as I had to wait two full weeks to buy it and with most heavily discounted items on Asos, it quickly disappeared one size at a time. Not to be completely defeated, I stalked all the different sections it was carried in (straight, plus, tall, and maternity) until one that would fit me was restocked. It must have been a return because there was only one, but I triumphed. And even though it is complately sold out now, if you have fallen madly in love I have hand selected an array of tasty, similar treats for you because I know how depressing it is to fall in love with something you can never have.

Please head to 14 Shades of Grey tomorrow to see the full round up of everyone's looks!

Dragonfly Lady | Style Imitating Art

source

It's that time again! Style Imitating Art this week was inspired by the intricate and lovely, Art Noveau style “Dragonfly Lady” brooch by RenĂ© Lalique. If you remember back to the last time Art Noveau was chosen for Style Imitating Art, you will remember that it's kind of my jam.

I immediately knew I was going to wear this dress because the organic flow of the fabric, the intricate floral pattern, and the jewel tones are all dead ringers for this broach. I added the belt for the gold finish and the polka dot blazer because, well, it was cold. But, also, because the little delicate pattern reminded me of the impressive detail in the dragonfly's wings.

Thank's so much to Salavar for choosing another Art Noveau beauty for Style Imitating Art because I cannot get enough. Check out 14 Shade's of Grey tomorrow to see the full round up of everyone's outfits. I know I can't wait to see!

Bible Quilt | Style Imitating Art

source

I love when Style Imitating Art pick has meaning behind it and these week's inspiration, Harriet Powers's Bible Quilt, is in honor of Black History Month. I was recently having a conversation with my six year old and I had to explain to him what slavery was. It was one of the hardest concepts I have had to explain to him so far. I just didn't know how to put it into terms that expressed the gravity of the situation without breaking his innocent little mind. Hopefully I managed it without any major parenting fails but, it left me feeling with all kinds of sick and sad feelings in my stomach.

My interpretation was inspired by the polka dots and the bits of black, brown, and red in the quilt. I have to say I wouldn't have actually put these shoes with this outfit but, after I had it all together, I realized just how right feels. Check out how the others interpreted the quilt tomorrow during the round up at Librarian for Life and Style.

Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket: Style Imitating Art

Source

I was so excited to see this week's pick for Style Imitating Art because it's such an incredible painting. The way the colors blend and move through the painting to create such a rich texture...ugh. I just can't get enough. It's certainly a treat for these ol' eyeballs. “Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket” by James Abbott McNeill Whistler also has a pretty cool history that's worth looking into if you're interested.

For my interpretation it was those swirling, mottled colors that I used to build my outfit. My galaxy print dress was an obvious choice with its cloudy nebula and speckles of stars. I added the mustard colored cardigan and the black accesories to bring it back to the colors of the painitng. This is definitely one of my favorite SIA interpretations!

Head on over to 14 Shade's of Grey to see everyone else's take on this beautiful painting.

Aspens, Northern New Mexico | Style Imitating Art

Aspens, Northern New Mexico by the famous photographer Ansel Adams was chosen as the inspiration for SIA this week. It's such a beautiful image with the organic subject matter rendered in a way that almost becomes an abstract image with it's strong contrast and linear composition. Those elements are the direction I chose to take in my inspiration. I paired this printed dress, which is also graphic, linear, and abstract, with a black base to act as a frame, keeping the attention on the print.

Head on over to Animated Cardigan to see the round up of all the other interpretations!
